It’s called “By The Rivers Of Babylon.” Very long dedication blurb. Mostly a wall of names of some goddesses I know, who have blazed a wall of fire through modern SF. Absent from their company was Miss Octavia, but she has inspired many other stories of mine.
This one was fomented by local comedienne Kristine Levine, a dear friend of many years. Kristine’s dream concerned the African origins of Atlantis, and the drop of mermaid or -man blood that all people of African descent thus possessed, in the dream.
This haunted me for weeks. I picked up DARK MATTER 1, and immediately found Ihsan Bracy’s horrifying “Ibo Landing.” While different in theme than the idea I had in mind, Bracy’s work made me examine different parts of what I wanted to tell, and pull them out into the light.
The Theran Atlantis theory is not a new one, but settling Thera with Aegyptians was pure speculation. Still, it would explain a lot.
The eruption at Thera is well-documented in the holy books of several major religious traditions. No actual mermaids were harmed in the writing of the piece. Enjoy….
