Few things are funnier, more enraging, funnier, more oppressive, funnier, more frustrating (frustratinger?) or funnier than organized religion. Fish sticks just may be the only thing. Let us, then, on this night, proclaim the mystery (read as: insane, hypocritical hilarity) of faith, with Laughing Liberally comedian Harry Terjanian and Atlanta speculative fiction satirist Zachary Steele.
Zachary Steele’s debut novel, Anointed: The Passion Of Timmy Christ, CEO, is a hilarious, satirical joyride of a romp through a version of Christianity that’s corporate-driven and frighteningly recognizable. In the world of Anointed, the writings of the Gospels failed to detail the origins of the organization Jesus formed after his resurrection, which was meant to spread his Word to the world. For more than two thousand years, The Christ Corporation has represented his Will– and anointed a new CEO and Christ every thirty-three years, to serve as the face of the company an successor to the founder, Jesus Christ.
Timothy Webb, The Christ Corporation’s newest CEO and Christ, not only doesn’t want the job–he doesn’t understand it. Trapped between the exquisitely tailored image of Christ and the abandoned altruism of his long-forgotten youth, he finds his last hope of resurrecting the true image of faith and defeating an Anti-Christ bent on ruling the world is an unlikely alliance with the misrepresented angel known as Satan.
Anointed has been well and widely received by critics. Well, at least some critics actually received a copy of Anointed, and have done said receiving in a successful fashion! Amongst those critics include Publishers Weekly, who called Anointed “a mix of raucous fun and deep questions”.
Steele will be reading select passages from Anointed guaranteed to make your sides hurt, including a bit about…well, we can’t tell you or it’ll spoil the joke. He’ll also be on hand to sign copies of the book, discuss the insane hypocrisy of corporate-driven religion, and to tell you what his favorite brand of frozen fishsticks is.
Appearing with Steele to help fully stick it to “the man”, and by the man we mean organized religion, work your over your funnybone (and your nerves) is comedian Harry Terjanian. Harry started performing stand up-comedy at the ripe old age of 18 in 2001. Since that time, he’s worked at many of New York’s top clubs and has been part of the Laughing Liberally comedy labs at the 45th Street Theater. Harry is also an alumnus of the Wicked Wicked HammerKatz, a New York University sketch group, writing and performing in several of their show runs at the Upright Citizens Brigade Theater including Reading is for Dicks, Go-Go Robot Dance Party, and A Wicked Wicked Christmas. In addition, he’s written and preformed a political one-man show, The No-Facts Zone at the UC,; appeared on MTV-U’s The Freshman, has been a producer/performer/writer of the Ron and Fez Show XM Satellite Radio, and a staff writer for The Record and Jersey Journal. He’s a graduate from New York University and scoffs at those who think the Islanders are better than the Rangers (c’mon, doesn’t anyone watch hockey anymore!?).
You will walk away from this very special night 100% smarter, 200% more attractive, 300% in pain from laughing, and, most importantly, knowing the answer to the only question that’s ever mattered: did Jesus like fishsticks?
